Buckle-Up for School Start-Up: Know What You Don’t Know (Yet!)

Starting a school is a wild ride! There is so much to do and know – but sometimes the hardest part is knowing what you don’t know! Participants will learn strategies for navigating funding, facilities, governance, personnel, and student recruiting that allow them to race through Year 1 without crashing. Panelists include experienced charter school founders and advisors from Innovate Public Schools, EdTec, Alpha Public Schools, and Oxford Day Academy.

Pedro Carreño Pedro Carreño, Innovate Public Schools

Pedro serves as the Senior Program Manager of World-Class Schools at Innovate, supporting parent and school leaders throughout the Bay Area. Prior to Innovate, Pedro was a 2009 TFA corps member at Excellence Boys Charter School in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. He then served as a school leader in Red Hook and East Harlem, NY. In 2015, he completed the National Principals Academy Fellowship with Relay GSE. Pedro serves on the board of the South African Education & Environment Project. He holds a B.A. in Latin American Studies with a Minor in Social Entrepreneurship from UNC-Chapel Hill and a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Relay GSE.

Mallory Dwinal Mallory Dwinal, Oxford Day Academy

Mallory Dwinal is the Founder & CEO of Oxford Day Academy (ODA). She holds a B.A. from Northwestern University, an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, as well as a Ph.D. in Education from Oxford University, which she attended as a U.S. Rhodes Scholar. Mallory was a 2011 Teach for America corps member.

Shara Hegde Shara Hegde, Alpha Public Schools

Shara Hegde, Chief Schools Officer for Alpha Public Schools, supports school leaders across four school sites and special education, and also partners with the CEO to provide strategic direction for the organization. Prior to joining Alpha, Shara served as the Founder and Executive Director of Cornerstone Academy, a K-8 charter school now part of the Alpha network. Shara also serves as Vice-Chair of the California Charter Schools’ Association Member Council and is an advisory board member for several nonprofit education startups. She received her BA in History from Brown University and her MA in Education Policy, Organizations, and Leadership Studies from Stanford University.

Dena Koren Dena Koren, EdTec, Inc.

Dena brings a blend of education and private sector experience to her work at EdTec. Early in her career, Dena led teacher recruitment at BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life), a national nonprofit afterschool and summer program for low-income students. Prior to EdTec, Dena worked as a strategy consultant with The Boston Consulting Group. In her current role, Dena works with a wide variety of charter schools, advising them on developing and managing their schools’ financials effectively and to achieve sustainability. Dena holds an MBA from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business and an AB from Princeton University.

The 25th annual conference will be held March 26–28, 2018 in San Diego, CA at the San Diego Convention Center.
