What’s the difference between an income statement and a balance sheet? This session will decode the fundamentals of how to read and feel comfortable with financial statements going forward.

Full Description:
Do you dread the part of the board meeting when it is time to review and discuss the financial statements? Do you think they are speaking in code? We will decode the fundamentals of accounting and budgeting so that you are prepared to effectively engage in financial discussions. Through group exercises, you will acquire the language, analytic tools and the insights needed to evaluate your organization’s fiscal health.

Michelle Cho Michelle Cho, EdTec, Inc.

Michelle Cho is currently a Client Manager at EdTec, a back-office service provider serving charter schools since 2001. In her role, she works closely with the school leadership and board to develop and manage operating budgets. Previously as a policy researcher at RAND, she was involved in designing and implementing a K-12 system-wide independent school reform in Qatar. She serves as the Finance Chair of Corpus Christi School in Piedmont, and taught finance and budgeting at Fels Institute of Government, University of Pennsylvania. She obtained her Masters in Education Policy from Harvard University.

Brian Holman Brian Holman, Musick, Peeler & Garrett, LLP

Mr. Holman advises and represents charter schools and other parties in charter school financing transactions and with respect to general corporate matters. He has advised and represented parties in over 20 New Markets Tax Credits assisted financings of charter school facilities totaling over $200,000,000 in loans to school facility owners. He has advised and represented charter school operators in other charter school facility acquisition transactions, in working capital financing transactions, and in corporate restructurings, including the creation of an umbrella corporation to facilitate the national expansion of a charter school operator and the spin-off of a charter school from a nonprofit organization.

Dorothy Lee Dorothy Lee, EdTec, Inc.

Dorothy Lee joined EdTec in 2008 and manages the Southern California region. She has worked with a range of schools, from charter developers as they get authorized to established networks like Environmental Charter Schools and Synergy Academies. Dorothy has presented on a wide variety of topics including replication, renewals, facilities, start-up, budgeting, governance and benchmarking.
